Last night I did as planned. Picked up things from home, etc. I'd put everything in the car, and was preparing to turn it on to leave when I realised - upon switching on the headlights - that something was on my car staring at me.

I did later take a picture with a flash, but this is how it looked when I first spotted it and freaked out at it.

I sat in my car trying to work out if these things bit or stung or what ... (yes, yes, I'm not very nature-inclined, so I realise I was probably way off on it doing any of those aforementioned things). And then I was trying to work out how to get it off my car, so I could drive off without it being blown off into the wind or something terrible like that. I wanted to get it off without touching it too, lol.

I ended up sitting in the car looking at it for a few minutes, and taking a picture (because as squicked out as I was, it's still a beautiful thing), before I decided to try and coax it onto a big stick and relocate it to a tree somewhere. I managed to get it onto a stick, but it fell off after I moved it a little and I wasn't game enough to put my hands down around to find it - the idea of something climbing/crawling on my arm squicks me out even more.

I don't know what happened to it after that, but I hope that it got away safely to live another day (just not on my car.)

Aww.. Looks like a stick bug. Doesn't sting or bite and it's vegetarian too. :)

Whew! I'm not a vegetable. I'm safe! :X What do they actually eat, just leaves?

Yes, I thought it was a stick insect, but I still manage to creep myself out anyway when I was trying to work out how to get it safely and gently off the car :X

Yes, they eat only certain types of leaves. I feed mine blackberry, rose, and sometimes oak.

The easiest way probably would have been to coax it onto a book or magazine, and then carry it over to a tree where you could coax it off. By coax, I mean gently nudge it with your finger so it starts walking. If you're not used to handling stick bugs, they can be kind of tricky to grab with your hands because of their long legs.

Ah! Interesting.

Of course. I didn't even think of that :X Yes, I didn't want to grab it, in case I damaged the poor thing and in case it climbed on me - in which case damage might have occurred while I freaked out.

I'm prepared for next time though, lol! Whew!

Yes, I'm glad you didn't kill it on impulse. I cringe every time I see people do that.

Oh gods, no! I would not do that. Whew. Yes that's awful. I mean, I cringed in fear of it, but didn't want to kill it.

I concur, stick insects are scary! people keep them as pets which i find pretty funny. when i was a kid i was playing in our front yard when one jumped on my leg (obviously i looked like a tree!) and i totally freaked out, screaming and yelled for my Dad who rushed out to me, thinking that I'd hurt myself really badly...
He laughed at me when it was just a stick insect!!

I freaked out once, when I was eight or nine and a hunstman climbed up my arm at Mon's place :X Ewwwwww.

Yep, looks about the size of the juveniles we get up here in the tropics!

Yes, I did say juveniles. Momma and Poppa are muuuuuuuch bigger!

*shudders* don't say those things! lol.

Do you see them frequently in your area?

I don't think it would've taken damage from being blown off. Falling damage doesn't affect insects much. It's the weight/size structural thing: elephants take much more damage from falling short distances than humans, for instance.

I hope this is definitely the case! I hope the insect was ok, after he fell off the car/stick.

Thanks! :)
