indigo
Les chats are chasing each other. Well, they were this morning. Indi was chasing Oscar around the house. They were silent, which I have read and seen said elsewhere as meaning that they are playing. There certainly weren't any hisses or claws as far as I am aware.

This is a good sign, right? If they are playing, I mean.

They are definitely touching noses (infrequently, but still) without hissing or anything, now. Oscar is still his roly poly, heavily furry, escaped-Ewok self. Indi is still her cheeky, affectionate self too.

Indi stole some cooked chicken out of my mother's bowl on Monday night when we had our backs turned. So off, and way out of line. I'm trying to break her of that, although it is the only time she has actually taken something from someone's plate. She is usually limited to trying to lick plates that people have finished with (also something I am trying to stop, since it's not like we let her do it even to start with - sigh). Mum only left her bowl for a moment because she's used to Oscar minding his manners - I don't know that he has ever tried a stunt like that.

I think that's a fundamental difference in their starts to life. Oscar only ever competed with his mother and litter-sibs, and was abundance weaned. Indi has had to compete with over 16 or so other cats for all her life until recently. The problem is that I can't now abundance wean her, because she scoffs everything we put down, and would go for more, and then even more if we let her. She would put on too much weight.

Still, they seem to be getting along. Positive progress! Hooray!

Shouldn't you call them i gatti?

My family and I have always had animals that could be allowed to eat as they liked without much worry (though the family cat did get a bit fat). A friend of the Woman of Interest has a cat whom they rescued when she was literally starving to death. It was evident from her amount of skin that, before this horrible ordeal, she had been a somewhat heavy cat, so her fat had allowed her to survive longer than would an average cat. Now, of course, she will eat as much as she can, and must be watched.

In fact, yes, lol. But I do occasionally address the cats in French as well, hehe. I'm sure it confuses them =X

Yes, we are more of the abundance weaning and related "food availability" school of thought as well. I am concerned, and suspect, that Indi will be like [info]the_mock_turtle's friend's cat.

I'm glad to read that they are getting along. You'll at least be able to focus on her training now that the co-existing with each other part is out of the way!

How old is Indi? I seem to recall you saying 6 months or so? Let her eat all she likes until she's about a year old. That's what we did with Isis (who likewise had to compete with other cats until we got her, when she was about 5 months old), and it's worked out well. First off, as a growing kitty, she needed lots of food. She would put on lots of weight and get little rolls of tummy fat, but then she would have a growth spurt and use up all that fat. Now, she's her full adult size, and has learned to eat when she is hungry rather than when food is put down, so we can feed her once a day like we do the dog. Some days, she eats all her food and asks for more, and some days her bowl is still half-full when I feed them.

We do still have to watch our food, though--just last week, Isis helped herself to my glass of milk where it sat on the dining table. *sigh*

Oh, yes, this is true. I don't ever really recall Oscar developing rolls though =X hehe, but he might have been too furry to see them! Also, I need to take into account that she is an indoor cat, and resultingly will be less active than Oscar 2 - 12 months of age.

Yuh, lol. Indi did that to Luke with a glass of milk before Oscar joined us, lol.

Yes, that's part of why Isis was prone to chubbiness--indoor cat. And it was quite visible because she's a short-hair. Mr'raowr, like Oscar, is an outdoor long-hair, so I suppose when we got Mr'raowr and Oscar, it wasn't nearly as obvious or exaggerated.

I miss Mr'raowr. I love Isis and all (despite her being about ten times more destructive than any cat I've ever met), but I miss my snuggly puff-ball. Now *there* is a cat that tends toward overweight. She tries to trick people into feeding her two or three dinners if she thinks she can get away with it.

*nods*

Is it not an option to bring her over? =(
