My family in Malaysia, and any friends visiting the area (one, plus his girlfriend), are all well and alive, thank gods. We are very lucky - as the tsunami that did hit Malaysia hit the state and area that our family is from (Perak, and some specifically from areas such as Pangkor, Lumut, and Penang - as well as various inland towns). We are even luckier that our friend - a seventeen year old Eurasian who is the child (and good friend of my brother) of my parents' friends (the father even went to school with dad back in Malaysia) - who was in Penang less than two hours before it hit chose to take the bus, leaving earlier than planned (the train was scheduled to leave shortly after the tsunami actually hit). I think we all cried tears of relief to hear Alistair was ok, because he is honestly one of the loveliest kids you can imagine, and is far too young to deserve such a short and tragic ending (and the same for many of the victims, I am sure).

So, my trip to Victoria - did I mention that? Well, I was going for a family wedding - I will post about later. Tonight, and in fact tomorrow, is just a little too hectic to allow for a decent update on happenings. Plus I'd like to have photos to show ... :) So, I hope you all have a safe and pleasant New Year's Eve. Take care, and I hope the hangovers aren't too discomforting :P

The whole tsunami think is upsetting...or maybe tragic is a better word. I'm helping to organize fund-raising here for that, and I donated $1000 to the Red Cross for it, but I wish I could do something more signifacntly helpful. Maybe the fund-raising will help...I'm not sure how many people here know their was a tsunami, let alone how extensively destructive it was (did you know a couple cultures now are facing extinction because so many people in their socities were killed?).

I did read an interesting article about an American couple who escaped the tsunami because they were scuba-diving at the time. :o Was weird. Ugh...tsunamis and hurricanes bother me. :x

On a more positive note, I hope ya have fun. And I won't have to worry about a hangover problem, either, which is a...plus......I guess. :x

Uhm...and thanks for talkin', earlier. *snugs*

*nods* I got your email about it. That will come in handy - and the interesting thing is this year (back in November) my extended family decided to skip giving presents to each other and instead donate the money we would have used to a charity ... I think most of us will be giving to a charity will give to one that is appealing for the victims of these events.

I had no idea that some cultures are close to extinction. I knew that huge numbers of people in many areas, and lots of little islands, were wiped out. Do know which cultures specifically?

I read about that! And saw it on the news.

Lol, thanks, I hope not to have a hangover either, actually. Talking any time is fine :)

Well, the e-mail was directed mostly at Americans. I figure you can probably donate to the Australian Red Cross. lol The idea your family had about presents was nice, too.

As far as extinction, the article I read was here: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/12/29/quake.india.reut/index.html

As far as the American tourists who survived while scuba diving, did the news happen to cover how horribly they were treated by the American passport-peoples?

*nods* yeah, that's what we'd been discussing since Christmas and the earthquake, when we weren't discussing the family wedding we were attending.

Thanks. I'll go read.

No! What happened?

They were just treated poorly. They couldn't find the people, initially, because they weren't with all the other countries...they were off in the VIP lounge. The American gov't officials demanded payment before they took passport photos or did anything, they were hassled about not having any paperwork...just treated a little callously, considering.

Glad to hear that they are all okay. With the high number of lost lives, it is nice to hear of people being well.

Have a good New Year's Eve. :)
